SpeedSeries news | Tony D’Alberto does the double in TCR

Tony D’Alberto has extended his Supercheap Auto TCR Australia Series lead out to 58 points thanks to two wins at Queensland Raceway.

The Wall Racing driver dominated the final race of the SpeedSeries weekend, leading home fellow Honda Civic pilot Zac Soutar who rose from eighth to fourth in the title race.

Jay Hanson completed the Race 3 podium for Melbourne Performance Centre, climbing two places to third in the standings.

“I’m just so relieved,” said D’Alberto, who leads Jordan Cox in the standings.

“We’ve had a great car this weekend, but we really needed to try and utilise it. I feel like we did everything we could so it’s great for the championship.

“I’m just happy for Wall Racing, Honda Australia, everyone involved in our program that gets us here, they’ve been believing in us for a long time. It’s just nice to get some wins under my belt.”

Two rounds remain in the 2022 season at Sandown and Mount Panorama respectively.

Traditionally, the Honda Civic hasn’t gone well at The Mountain, making the lead all the more important.

“Every point is going to count,” said D’Alberto.

“We know we’ve got an uphill battle going to Bathurst, but we’ll focus on it one weekend at a time. I felt like we did a great job this weekend.”

From second on the grid, D’Alberto got the jump over Hanson and with it the hole shot into turn one.

Soutar and Luke King got into the side of each other out of turn one and again into turn two, the second instance sending King into a slide that gave Soutar the spot.

Behind them, Brown looked to make the most of the first lap melee with a pass on the grass on Cox as the field headed to turn three.

Moments later, Brown locked up under brakes and slammed the side of King, who lost three positions in the kerfuffle.

At the end of lap one, it was D’Alberto who led Hanson, Soutar, Cox and Brown.

King sought to put a pass on Cox at turn three come lap three, the pair banging doors on corner exit.

Cox prevailed while King wiggled out of turn five and opened the door for Michael Clemente to mount an attack.

Soon enough, King found himself in a sandwich between Clemente and Bailey Sweeny but managed to hold his own and retain sixth.

At the head of the field, the top four skipped away leaving Cox in their wake.

An awkward incident between Garry Rogers Motorsport teammates Aaron Cameron and Kody Garland resulted in the latter facing the wrong way out of turn three.

Having threatened for the lead early on, Hanson soon began falling back into the clutches of Soutar, who, by lap 13, put a pass on the Audi RS 3 for second at turn one.

Soutar quickly began eating in D’Alberto’s lead, but ran out of laps to mount a challenge. In the end, D’Alberto claimed the win by a mere 0.4 seconds over Soutar.

Hanson drifted back, finishing third for Melbourne Performance Centre while teammate Brown was fourth.

Sweeny was fifth followed by Cox, King, Josh Buchan, Clemente, and Nathan Morcom.

The Supercheap Auto TCR Australia Series headlines the next SpeedSeries event at Sandown on September 16-18.
